Back in the day (season 8 of X-Files) Mulder tells Doggett, “I’ll believe in anything.”  That’s me.  I believe in stuff.  That’s why I write fantasy.  All of my “what if’s?” are actually “why not’s?”

I believe in an Intelligent Creator.  How could there not be?  Have you seen the beauty in the world?  Have you ever noticed how wonderfully organized it is?  People may not be perfect, but nature exists in absolute perfection.  I have never, ever seen chaos right itself into order without someone intending to straighten it out.   My sons’ rooms?   Absolute chaos that will never organize itself unless we impose order on it. The universe?  Holy cow!  An atom, a solar system, a galaxy–all spherical/elliptical held together by a strong, attractive center.  Yes, flowers are bright colors so that birds, bees and butterflies will be attracted to them and enable pollination.  But why don’t all trees look alike?  Why do pear trees have a different, distinctive shape than apple trees?  Or cherry trees, which are different from both the others?  Ok, so some birds and bugs like the taste of apple blossoms instead of cherry blossoms.  But do you think a bird cares if a tree is round or oval? The more science I learn–and I am still learning–the more amazed I am at the mind of the Creator.

Multiple universes?  Of course there are.  If you have an Intelligent Creator with all eternity to create, why would He create ours and stop?  What is He going to do with the rest of His time?  We’re talking about eternity here.  Existence without end.  That is a really, really long time.  Does an artist paint one picture and stop painting?  Does a writer write one story and quit writing?

Extraterrestrial life?  Like they say in the movie Contact, if there is no life except that on Earth, it is an awful waste of space.  Have they visited us?  I admit that seems less likely.  The universe is huge with lots and lots of empty space.  Crossing those distances takes an incredibly long time.  I can’t rule out the possibility, though; look at the things we have accomplished that no one would have believed possible even a hundred years ago.  Could a fantastic galactic battle have happened “a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away?”  Sure it could.  Why not?

Supernatural is kind of a misnomer to me.  I believe that there are more things in heaven and earth than we can see with our eyes or hear with our ears, though we certainly have an awareness of them with our other senses.  Those things exist as part of nature, not excepted from it.  Does the soul live as a separate entity from the body?  Well, I’ll tell you what I know for sure.  My spirit is young and excited and filled with wonder, but my body continues to age in a most frustrating way. I still feel the urge to dance and skip and run, but my legs have become heavy and clumsy. Do I believe that spirits exist beyond our sight?  Yep.  Do I believe that those spirits can be reborn in different bodies?  Sure.  Why not?  Haven’t you ever known an old soul–a person, particularly a child, who seems wise well beyond his/her experience?  Compared with others who seem blind to the obvious truths right in front of their noses?  I have, plenty of times.

I could go on and on.  When I look at the world around me, or up at the night sky into the universe beyond the world, I am amazed and I believe anything is possible.

Why not?
