I am not by nature a person who angers easily. Of course certain things will get me riled up, e.g. bullies. But a character who is full of hatred with no heart for forgiveness or understanding–this is unnatural for me. Nonetheless, in order for a story to have conflict it is sometimes necessary–actually often necessary–to interject a bad guy with no redeeming qualities.
I’m there today with a character who has not walked off the page like the others. I have to force him in and make him smarmy and unlikeable. At the same time, I have to give him enough life that the reader will feel like he is in the room with him/her and he has wronged him/her personally. I have to charge into a situation full of conflict which I would try to avoid in real life.
Oh well, no more stalling. It has to be done.
